Scot this really is tremendous! I just sat and looked at it on full resolution for the last 20 minutes. I scrolled back and forth between the images quite a bit and then went back to medium resolution so I could see the whole painting. The foliage is so well done and such a difficult thing to paint well. I know believe me, the weeds & bushes behind the deer - mind numbing. And although I'm having difficulty finding "what's different" the one thing that strikes my eye is a warmth that is lacking in the photo, and I'm not talking about color. In my opinion you've improved on the photo so much... and that's just part of the beauty of what we do.
I'm waiting for the next one, but... take your time.
Almost forgot, - purely from a marketing standpoint, you should post this painting on the web under the name "Dog of Bruges" Probably get like a zillion and a half hits. maybe an idea to make print$ \:D/
Scot!!! Absolutely outstanding!!! I'm gobsmacked ...going slow pays off in the long run doesn't it...I love this painting absolutely love it ... it's a real winner, jcdr may have a point about making prints =D>
@Ronna, thanks so much! @iwanttopaintrealism, thanks for the huge compliment. I am far from a master but I do feel like Mark's method has allowed me far more success than I could have hoped for. @n0ll4n, If nothing else, I feel like i could identify what subject matter will require this kind of patience in the future. I had no idea when I started this. @rgr, thanks, I really was trying to represent the photo faithfully as an exercise in Mark's method. I can see that maybe I might not be so anal about it from now on. @Harrell, Thanks for your comments. Having googled that, I noted that one other person (at least) in the world decided to paint it. It's very different from mine but HERE it is. @shirley_seput, wow, that's quite a compliment, thanks! Your paintings have been a big motivator for me, not to mention your adherence and obvious faith in Mark's method. Thanks for looking at my work. @Robert, I know this sort of exercise isn't exactly your cup of tea, being close representation of the photo so I thank you for your encouragement. My next challenge is to move toward a looser style and I'm interested in that partly because of your posts. Thanks. @Kingston, Thanks so much. I'd like sometime to be able to paint more in the fashion of your boat painting. That thing blows me away. @Dencal, thanks Denis, I'm glad you like it. @jcdr, Thanks for looking so closely at this. As I'm sure you noticed, there are value issues and even some color issues. My palette started to get completely dry by the end and I kind of used what was still wet for the upper right, which is why it's a little too yellow. I really did learn how to mix while doing this painting. I mixed the whole thing on the fly. Your Bella painting was hugely motivating for me. Thanks for all your posts and insight every day. You rock. @Mark_Carder, My friends and family are freaking out wondering when I had time to attend art school. Your ideas make so much sense to me. I can't thank you enough. @Pop, Thanks, yes, I think slow is the way I have to paint. Over the course of these four months I've learned a lot but I have not learned to go one bit faster. Thanks for your comments, and congrats on your painting of 4, it is one of the best on the forum in my opinion.
This was such a test of patients and skill on all levels! Wow I am impressed Honestly it looks like an exact replica of the original!!! Talk about realism. Congratulations on an excellent painting. You should be extremely proud of this ^:)^ ^:)^ ^:)^
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Most of this painting had already dried to a matte finish, so I'm excited to see what the varnish will do for it. The paint that I had just added in the last few days when finishing should be dry in about a week.
@greendl, thanks. I took a photo of it today with my actual camera instead of my phone. While it has yet to be varnished, I think this photo of it shows the colors and the values a little better.
@openwyder This is fantastic!!! I haven't had much time this week to spend on here but have been trying to keep up on my phone when I can. I haven't been able to comment until now. Great job :-bd
Gosh....I thought I posted about this painting...I've looked at it many times and Love it! I can tell your a perfectionist....probably has something to do with your being a dentist.....
Thank you @marieb, @sue_deutscher, @pop and @Savannah. This painting took such a long time and while I was painting it I saw so many subjects for a new painting that I thought I'd like to attempt. But now I can't remember what they were and I can't seem to find a subject that appeals to me at all. Maybe I need to set up a shadow box......
Scot, You've done a Splendid Job!!! The process was worth every moment, and I think there is nothing you can't attempt to paint. I know you're pretty darn happy with the outcome. Truly a FANTASTIC PIECE. BRAVO!!! Gorgeous Rendering! =D> =D> =D>
OPNWYDER, Absolutely beautiful, Fantastic detail, and on 16 x 20 unbelievable. Back in the day I was (among many other jobs ) a bricklayer/ waterproofer. Where's the settlement cracks ? This gives me a goal to shoot for. Thanks =D> =D> =D> =D>
I've been meaning to remark about your clever forum name as well. It always brings a smile to my face whenever I run across it. (perfect teeth) Your painting was before I became a member of this forum but I simply adore it. Your struggles were well worth it--thanks for sharing them as well.
Thank you @davidwwilson and @Summer for the kind words. I did take the photo from which I worked when I painted this painting. I didn't realize at the time what impact that choice would have. While, honestly, I am very proud of this painting, the degree of difficulty that the subject presented for me has kept me from starting any new paintings for almost 3 years. I have stained a new wooden panel in the last few days and it is the first time I've even made it this far since finishing the dog painting. I'm planning to order some Geneva paints and pick a new photo from which to work. We'll see how it goes. Getting started on a new painting seems like pulling teeth. I'm not too bad at pulling teeth though.
