I have been getting into painting for the first time, and I have heard that the colour checking method is only really meant for paintings that will be viewed at a room's length. If enough detail was put into the painting, would the tones work up close?
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.
It pays to assess the credibility of everything you hear.
Colour checking will make a painting appear very realistic regardless of the viewing distance.
However, if the artist chooses to paint in a loose style with large brushes, a larger viewing distance will improve the coherence of the image by a process called optical mixing.

James, you are lucky he's not charging us for a lesson. Color checking helps with values not just colors.
Whadd ya mean “not charging?” Are you trying to tell me your account is still in arrears?
