Latest Painting.... Crystal Basket

Hey all.... I have a passion for painting glass as some of you already know. I usually use a dark background because I like the contrast with the light reflection of glass. I decided to experiment a little and go with a light background for a change. I have done one other light backgound with glass and wasn't that thrilled about it. This time I think it works ok...
size is 18 x 24

I agree with Liz and Denis. The light background I think really works and the glass basket is painted superbly. I also really like the placement of the fruit - the way you have the colors? It's perfect Shirley!

I just looked at your pear again. I wouldn't touch the stem of that pear though. That looks pretty solid to me at least on my computer. Feels like it's in the space in connection with the background?

Do you see that too Mark?

I was one of the first to flag this painting with a very sincere thumbs up but reluctant to leave a comment. It's not a beginner's place to criticize, even less nit-pick, but rather to watch and listen and learn. Now that the few criticisms have focused on the pear, I feel a bit safer chiming in with my initial thoughts. The glass basket of fruit blew me away--incredible, wonderful!! But then there is the lonely pear off the the right--it seems flat, pasted on, out of place. I thought, "What a shame, the pear is keeping this from being a true masterpiece". And the male mind relentlessly seeks solutions whether they are solicited or wanted or not--a gender thing. First, I think it's the wrong kind of pear--it looks like one of those brownish, dead flat Bosc pears--that would explain the lack of highlights on it. How about a Bartlett pear?--they are green and shiny, usually ripen to a nice yellow, but some of them also show a bit of rosy blush as they ripen. A pear with the green, yellow, and rosy blush would tie into all the colors of the fruit basket wonderfully. You might consider laying the pear down, and scooting it over to overlap the glass basket a little. I worry I'm overstepping here--I apologize if so.

I was having trouble getting the pic to open up big but finally did. I think maybe just a little blending of the background and the table top into the edges of the pear would perfect it. Don't get it though cuz the edges look just like the apples and they are perfect already.....weird! Gotta agree with Tam tho to LEAVE THAT PEAR STEM ALONE!

I reworked the pear.... left the stem alone just for Tam and Liz
I think it is better... how about you Mark?

Shirley, you certainly are the expert in painting glass, crystals, marbles! I also simply get attracted to colours... another reason why I do so love all the fantastic colours that you've used.

I would like to attempt to do some myself... I've taken a few shots yesterday of different setups, but I'm not sure which ones would be the best for me to start working on. The most I'm concerned about in this early stage is how to set up my still life properly. I do want to make sure that I choose the right one so I don't waste my time.

I'm just wondering if you and/or anybody else could please help me, ie give me some suggestions based on the items I've got... I can email some of my photos. Thank you.

I am glad you ask... I suggest you take a few photos of a set up you are working on then post a new thread asking for suggestions... you will get lots of ideas! How exciting!!
One thing I would advise is for your first painting... keep it simple.

I agree with everyone Shirley...your art is awesome and should be published in an art magazine...fantastic! About the pear on the right...since you reworked it...it is outstanding...but I think the problem is not the pear but rather that you have 2 focals....both yellow objects are fighting for attention and confuses the viewer as to which one to look at...I would change the color of the right one...or perhaps change the object altogether....something besides a fruit....also the stem on the pear is leading the eye out of the picture....you could even lay the pear down on its side... with the stem turning toward the beautiful glass....pointing to the basket...just some suggestions that I would change....for whatever its worth...I don't mean to criticize but this is just what I'm seeing......

I am so amazed by all the incredible artwork on these forums!!! Congratulations Shirley, you are a true inspiration to Marks method!!! I have my still life all set up and have started to draw, but scrolling through everyone's posts keeps me busy as I am so awe struck by all the beautiful paintings!
