I live on the Gold Coast, Australia.  I'm retired.  I love painting in oils.   I'm working on a portrait in oils called Lucia.  I have to increase my skills. AFter seeing some of the work online, my portrait feels like a sketchy underpainting!  I'm stumped on the hair, but my mindset is wrong because hair is not hair, it's just something else with values and tones and shapes etc like everything else!

Welcome @Dianna.  You're right, it's all about putting the right value in the right place.  Then you get points for style if you can do it with bold brushstrokes.

If you're stumped, upload the painting, and you'll see why it was a good idea to join this forum.

@Diana, if you want to comment and tag  multiple,people just [email protected] without a “space” before their name .. look at what other people are doing. If I haven’t visited the forum for a while and want to catchup with discussions, I go to “ recent discussions” ... I can look for advice on a particular topic, like “ uploading photos”  etc.  if you see a post you would like to save or revisit, hit the little star beside it ! You will get there
