If you use a Mac, Sip might be a good choice for getting to know colour. I already used it for design work and I'm finding it even more useful now.
It will sample the colour from any place you click on-screen. So you could even pause a video to a frame you like and use it with Sip. It allows you to drag and drop sampled colours to different custom palettes to make separate colour strings. What I love about it is it gives the colours a name and adds them to a palette with a large circle which you can print off so it's easier to check your colour against the paint.
If you were unsure of where to place a colour you mixed, all you have to do is hover over the image and the name will pop up. Once your whites are balanced it should work fine.
