Hello everyone. My name is Mark. I've never joined a forum like this before. I used to destroy all my art (paintings and drawing) on a regular basis once or twice a year. They burn really well I've had a break of many years from drawing and painting. Pleased to say that I've started again...

I apologise if this is the wrong place but I though you would like to see some of my work. I don't like to make a big thing of it and most of it is just copies I've done by hand... I'll be producing stuff from my head over the coming weeks...

Welcome to the DMP Forum.

Nice drawings. Sign and date these and build a portfolio. The aim is to experiment with stroke, texture and shading as you have done here and build a graphic comparison along with acquiring new techniques.

Try some soft pastel, or willow charcoal.

Welcome Hairshirt. Nice to see your drawings. I think they are very good and I especially like the 'scary' one with these intense eyes ! If you ever burn your work again, you should know, that we are all standing in your back with buckets full of water .... :-) ...

Hairshirt man. I can appreciate the wanting to move on by burning your history. Woody Allen has never seen one of his films I'm told. But you might want to store it with a friend or in a vault instead and come out and view it much later. do you know where you want to go with your art? (not professionally - artistically)

You're doing a lot of things right in these.

It is original how you sometimes use the paper texture to supplement the subject texture. You really see the emotion of your subjects, and communicate it. So, you don't have to "make a big deal" of your work. Just share it, and we can make the big deal for you : )

These drawing are absolutely wonderful.  I'd like to share a technique that I use when rendering teeth.  I got it from a pro.  He said when drawing teeth, don't use a pencil or an eraser.  Instead, roll a sharpened tortillion into the graphite or charcoal material you are using in the drawing, and draw the shapes/values at the beginnings and ends of each tooth and the corners of the mouth.  There won't be any lines or erasure marks, just shapes of shadows.  It makes the teeth look brighter and whiter.  Just a suggestion and not to take anything away from the outstanding work that you have done here.

Denis  This is the best example that I found online this morning that shows this technique.  The only erasing was for the highlights.  It really improved my drawings.

Denis.  The image I provided wasn't the best example of what I was talking about but it will do until I can find the exact author and technique in my library.  I can see some pencil damage in the above image that I captured from the internet that wouldn't be there if only a tortillon had been used.  And, it's clear that an eraser had also been used in the highlighted areas.  Though both methods work, I prefer one over the other.  Thanks.  Now where did I put that book?   Summer

Denis.  A book entitled Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces by Carrie Stuart Parks, p. 114 deals with drawing teeth, as well, and is also the pencil and erasure method.  This book, you may remember, was mentioned a few times on this forum.
