A friend bought ten paintings in 1971 from a hospital in Germany that was being demolished . They look like watercolor and pen and ink.
They are beautifully done and well preserved.
Took photo of signiture
I read the first signature as 'Martin Rüttgens'? Could not find a painter with that name. There is a famous dog trainer with this name, therefore it gets difficult to google him further...
EstherH; thanks I know the names in pencil are the towns. I can't get the name of the artist,
What value do you think the ten ( 10 ) paintings have?
Thanks, I appreciate your efforts
Bill, I am sorry, I have no idea about the value of those paintings. I am not even sure about the name as this is an older German handwriting and I am not too familiar with... couldn't find anything more about it...
I apologize for the quality of the photos, I took the photos with my phone. while they were hanging on the wall with bad lighting and glass over them, (Sat there for 4 days didn't think of photographing them till I was leaving ) I'm definitely not the brightest bulb on the tree.
EstherH Ron Summer I think they are beautiful and they look like watercolor and pen and ink. I didn't make an offer because she said she was leaving them to her children , I told her she should have them appraised so the kids don't toss them. That would be a shame.
They are very nice indeed. I could not give up the search... and Heureka: I think I found him Bill: His name is Gustav Lüttgens? Here is a link (sorry about the length) with another watercolor where you can compare the signature... do you think it is the same?
@billj - These are really beautiful. It seems strange seeing such mastery without the use of masking fluid. Thanks for posting them. I look forward to the results of EstherH finding out more about them.
EstherH, It sure does look like the same artist. the paintings my friend has, were bought 45 years ago from a hospital they were hanging in for who knows how long, i'll guess 10 to 15 years which makes these paintings at least 60 years old approximately , My freind sealed the back of the paintings with paper and tape, when she got them, also the sun does not touch them. so they are in great shape. I would still like to know how much the paintings my friend has are worth, ( can they be originals ? If there is nothing else on them, they are still beautiful and I would love to have them.
@Ron I noticed that you gave me an "off topic" icon/emoji in this thread. lol How can it be off topic when the watercolor thread itself is off topic on this oil painting forum. lol
@billj : This is all I found out about Gustav Lüttgens: He was born 1898 (no save source knows where). He went to the Art University in Berlin and then worked in Rothenburg an der Taub as a painter, artist and illustrator. A lot of postcards were printed of his watercolors. Not much is known about his life. During the war he was member of a famous artist circle in Rothenburg. In 1957 a book with 10 prints of his Watercolors was published and is still available in certain auctions in the Internet. There is nothing to find about his life or his death. I don’t know where and when he died. About the price of his paintings: I only found one price in an auction 2011. There was an oil painting 100x85cm sold for 270 Euro.

On the second painting it says " Tangermünde " which is a little town in the north-east of Germany. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerm%C3%BCnde
On the last painting it says " Weissenburg ". This looks like a beautiful little town in Thüringen Germany. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altstadt_%28Wei%C3%9Fenburg%29
