What is the difference between Titanium White and Zinc White?

Both being a variety of white paint, the names identify the metal used in it's making to impart the characteristic attributes. TW being the newest, whitest, brightest and highest covering power. Overused tints can appear chalky. ZW introduced to replace the toxic lead (Cremintz, flake) white. Zinc white is a more translucent white with good covering power. Overused can be brittle, crack and some reports suggest delamination. These whites are the mainstay of modern palettes for tinting pigments and forming the highlights.

  • Thank you. Very informative. I was a bit confused as to which white I should be using in my Grisaille paintings.
