Very nice! (I've taken portraits in landscape format on my phone so that it would stay right side up when loading. Even if I crop it later, it stays right side up.)
The slightly exaggerated nose to mouth proportion and bunched chin muscles along with the look of consternation in the eyes all go to intensifying the impending wail?
I have a very nice eraser that helps get those details in the hair and such. Tombow Mono zero eraser. I LOVE it. When I do charcoal and pencil drawings, I avoid using white charcoal at all. It gives a different color to the underlying colors. The only way it works is if your paper is toned in the middle of your values (IMO). For example, your paper is a creamy white. That creamy white comes through in all the light areas in varying degrees depending on how much graphite is laying on top. If you start using a cooler white in highlighted areas, all the other areas where there is some paper showing needs to have the same coloring. I would do a mock up on the same paper to see if you like it. If anything, I would shift your value scale darker if you need more detail in your highlighted areas.
Well I wish I had started on good paper this is some old sketch book paper not very white to start with. The reference photo had good darks and bright highlights but not allot of value steps in the mid tones
I LOVE arches hot press watercolor paper for drawing. My graphite is darker, less shiny (maybe because arches watercolor paper is a tad hairy?) You have got to try that stuff! If you PM me your address, I'll send you a sheet.
@Megans I have one of those i just picked it up art an at supply store here in Memphis.I' i hadn't seen them before. It would be interesting to compare drawing equipment lists. I'll post a pic and list of my tools when i get back to the hotel.
@dencal sorry somehow I missed your comment, thank you getting the likeness was a bit of a trick from the first photo to the last you may notice her right cheek shrinking as I adjusted the contour.

Great pencil work.
