Dismal River White Course Hole 15 WIP

Here is my latest painting of Dismal River White Court, a nice par 3 which had a cool sky one of the days I played it. 20x30 inches, my largest canvas to date. I have found the large canvas much more time consuming as I can't simply finish up one color in one sitting and have resigned myself to compartmentalizing sections of the painting and then moving on. Not something I have really had to do with prior paintings, at least not to this extent. The first photo shows the photo and initial dark areas. The second shows a close up of the left portion of the painting, unfortunately with too much glare. The 3rd photo shows the green complex and progress to date.

Did a little last night, though really wasn't as focused as I should be. As a result I tried to stay away from detailed areas like the grass mounds around the green and just did basic filler areas in the foreground. Am just using a Filbert #6 and Filbert #2 right now for brushes and that is it.

Better focus tonight. The rolling sand hills (covered in grass) are next.

Finished up the land portion this evening.

Sky is progressing. Using basically my #6 Filbert and that's it for the sky. Lots of blue green in upper left and red and brown in the lower sky.

Looks really good! The color matching is excellent. I'm not sure how I feel about the overexposed part of the clouds. I'll be anxiously waiting to see how you go about it.

@MeganS thank you. I will likely leave the clouds overexposed at this point. They were truly that bright and vibrant at the time and while a little odd, I think with the other cloud formations present, it will not be too distracting. The final decision will be made once it all is on canvas, if it looks bad, I will have to figure something out at that point. Josh

Getting more details in the clouds. The overexposed portion is looking better, but still undecided at this time. Pleased with how the grass and green complex are looking with the darker sky being added in. Using two Filbert #3s to get more detail in the clouds, otherwise still just the one main Filbert #6. Colors are getting more brown and less red, with a little yellow thrown in ocassionally. Excuse the glare, taken with my iPhone. Hopefully about 2 or 3 more 1 hour sittings at night and this will be done.

Finished this up this evening. Pleased with the result and don't think I will change the overexposed area at this point, the sun coming through the clouds was intense that day as a storm was rolling in. I think this photo portrays that well. Love the golf hole itself and how lucky I was to play golf at such a beautiful spot.

Wow. Really great. The green has changed? It was much brighter in the valley in the beginning (the first few photos). The cloud lighting in the end is dramatic, but on the right, I wonder if it might help to have less detail in the clouds so as to give a more impressionistic feel that would then not pull the attention away from the landscape.

@Hillyman‌ the green changed simply because of the addition of the sky, no other work was done on it after I finished that area. As to the clouds, understand what you are saying, but the dramatic sky if it pulls attention away is fine with me as well. It was very dramatic at the time as it is in the middle of nowhere and to see a large storm rolling up is quite an experience. Here is a view from the clubhouse with the storm rolling in and just how in the middle of nowhere you are. Thanks again for taking time to comment, it is appreciated.
