I've just noted that the SDM for Titanium White has changed from 5 parts stand oil or linseed stand oil, to 1 part.
Questions:
- With this new recipe, am I right to assume that we no longer need to add about 4 teaspoons of linseed oil per 40ml BEFORE mixing the TW SDM? just double-checking.
- I have already mixed extra linseed oil + the normal SDM (ie for all colours except TW) for my TW... is this still okay to use? If not, is there anyway that I can adjust this to the new recipe?
Either is fine, the new way (as descibed on the drawmixpaint.com/supplylist and in the video above) is a purist way, it makes for a slightly stronger paint film. If you only have old recipe Delq, then that is fine.
Order over $80 (eg walnut oil) and you get free shipping.

Using opaque paints in the 'alla prima' technique means the toning of the canvas is there to help your eye see the correct relationship of values as you apply them. The tone color is indeed important for watercolor or glazed acrylics and glazed oils. For Mark's method a mid value brown does the trick.
Try placing a value string of off whites on a brightly lit untoned canvas and you will get the picture. The brightness and whiteness shifts your perception and your choices will all be too bright. When the dark background is finally in place the result will be a high key, chalky painting.

And what's the difference between Artists' oil and Winton oil colour.. The price jump is almost double.. Artists' is more pricey. I know the SDM is tested on the Artists' grade but is it possible to apply on the cheaper paints?
Winton is the W&N Student range designed to be less expensive by using more fillers and less pigment or cheaper substitute pigments.
I have not tried Winton but I suggest the results will be different from what Mark demonstrates. Why don't you test drive one or two tubes and let us know what you think.

In that case I will pose my answer as 'Yes".

I am having a real difficult time sourcing 5000K bulbs, as well as 9 or 20 w bulbs. I have tried all lighting, hardware and building supply stores within a 400 km radius to no avail. As well as having ordered from multiple sites however, once they arrive and despite the online description stating 5000K, they're not as described. Is anyone familiar with a reliable source to order these through ? Thank You .....Karen
