Used??? Try manipulated and exploited. The artist Pei-Shen Qian made thirty works for Rosales and Freeman for peanuts. The fraud and deception was fabricated in the Knoedler Gallery.

The interest for me is the conga line of connoisseurs nodding and cooing over wet paint.

And there was the guy in England who, at the behest of someone from the upper strata of London's social world, created "masterpieces" using hardware store paint and K-Y jelly.  They made millions, and probably would not have been caught if Mr. Fancy Pant's wife hadn't tipped police.  To my mind, "modern" and abstract painting is open to quick copies or quick interpretation, and the greedy are so easily convinced they're buying into the big time while being cautioned not to touch the painting for at least three days while it dries.
