sorry it's been a long time since my last activity. I hope all has been well. last night i finished the Dead layer portrait of my grandmother. I am still using the 7 Layer flemish technique to paint all my portraits. Here is an update of my progress. Thanks for looking

I've used this technique in the past, is it Alexi's technique? I admire anybody who has the patience to do this technique I found it exhausting, but I have to admit it does give a translucenct look to the skin. Watching with interest.

@POP: I use alexei style, but I modify it to allow my paints to dry quicker using liquin and using titanium white instead of flake white, I also use quick dry spray very very very lightly. I also spoke with George Ayers on YouTube who does excellent flemish work and has a modified technique.

@robert: the actual photo is a black n white from 1930, those lines are the only ones that pop out much, if I add a second dead layer in addition to the color layer, those lines will be more subtle. There are more darker shadows in the face I have yet to add but they are sooo soft in nature they will barely be noticeable.

Looks good, its very interesting method, but takes a lot of time. Be good to see the final result.

Good to see you again DJ....I've also tried Alexi's technique...but not for me...as I'm not a speed painter and like to see immediate results...

Have you ever tried Mark's technique? If you've ever seen his work ...his skin tones have a wonderful luminosity....

it would be interesting to see you paint a portrait of your Grandmother in Mark's technique and one in your technique.. then compare...see if there's much difference.

Anyway...you have the makings of a fine piece of art...anxious to see your progress!

I painted this portrait of a chef with the layered technique, it drove me crazy ... I painted the whole thing grayscale and then painted the colour on the top, had a bit of success with this one though, it made it into Salon des Refuse in Sydney. I then decided that the technique was not for me either Savannah!

i have used this technique many times its absolutely the best for portraiture but it is time consuming good job cant wait to see the color layers and glazing
