DMP Forum started in 2022... at least it did for me. But apparently people were posting inspiring work even before Covid!
My idea is for one person per week to post an artwork from the forum back catalogue each Monday. It would be good if they also added a few words explaining their choice. Then the rest of us can join in with comments on this week's post. Once a week should allow for research, reflection but not mess up the forum daily business.
I'm not a big one for rules, hopefully a system will emerge, but...
1. Be polite. The artist may not be active on the forum to defend themselves.
2. Share the choosing around. Choices will be personal so the more voices we have over the weeks the better.
3. Hopefully 2 rules are enough 😉

I love the liquidity of the egg and the crisp edge of the broken shell. Astounding.
What really inspires me is this was a study as part of a series set by his art coach and was painted quickly. More details in PaulB's blog. Search for "A couple of white eggs"
@dencal you have been on DMP longer than anyone I know. Would you possibly do a post for next Monday 30 Jan?
Good idea, great choice to kick us off.
Stand by please.

I honestly didn't realise that you were still around.
Your painting is gorgeous blah blah.
Two questions:
1 how did you paint the edge of the broken shell? Did you use a fine brush or nudge edges backwards and forwards with a big brush.
2 how did the Art Coach arrangement work out for you? I was buzzing with ideas after I read your description of the task and the feedback.
I felt the edge of the shell was important to represent here, because it adds to that thin delicacy I was trying to achieve. I used a three-hair brush, which is a rigger brush with all but three hairs clipped off with nail clippers. Three works. Two don't seem to hold enough paint to make a line.
Good question, with a difficult answer.
Positives:
At first I was very eager to get feedback of any kind, and be encouraged to work faster, use larger brushes, take on more complex compositions, enter more shows, and so on. As a beginner I wanted guidance.
Negatives:
I learned that I don't enjoy being told what to do, try different styles, wipe off paintings, paint more traditional subjects, stop doing certain habits, and do paint exercises.
Summary:
Coaching is great for structure, motivation and early guidance. For skills, go find someone who can really teach. OIr find a mentor.
It’s now Monday morning (4am) in Australia and here is my choice from the Archives.
What a knockout portrait of Valentin’s daughter.
The composition: casual, natural and interesting. Soft focus b’ground pops the portrait.
The lighting: a splendid mix of warm overhead and cool raking computer screen.
The fabrics: all showing correct texture and perfect fold and drape form.
A beautiful piece of work.
Thank you @valentin for painting this and @dencal for bringing it out.
It changes what a portrait looks like in my head. There's so much going on other than the face, but none of it is skimped. The artist at the top of their game.
I hadn't noticed the two lights but it's so cleverly done.
You are invited to post the next gem from the DMP Archives on Monday.
Denis
Thank you.
Yes you can do that, or click on any at the top of the page.

. Until I saw it, I had an excellent flower and fruit still life by @myc ready to post. Also, @PhilCouture had a really strong contender, However,............
This weeks clear winner deserving of more accolade, is (another portrait this week) by @charis.
I don't think I need to say a word about this painting. Scruffy, the subject may be, but there is not a hair out of place in this painting as far as I am concerned

The brush strokes are more visible than last week's. It certainly suits the subject and pose. There's so much to look at in how @charis painted the features and beard.
The two portraits sum up my competing desires - flawless realism Vs realism created from mark making.
Great choice @toujours
