It's wonderful, @MichaelD. The light reflected off the boiler makes it look very 3D and realistic. Great job - especially given the time constraints and that you did it from a B&W photo.
Pretty cool. The light / brushwork on the boiler under the rail is my favourite part. You've captured the roundness well.
I've looked back at the photo and was surprised how wonky the wheels looked in real life! Also, how light the ground beneath was beneath the loco and tender.
Michael, so small a canvas, and I'm amazed at quite what you've achieved in that really quite tight space.
Didn't quite fully get it until I opened your posted pic separately and resized it on my screen to match your 8"x6'' original. The picture came together beautifully.
I think the wheels look fine, and the way you've handled the masonry in the buildings behind sets the whole picture up. Very nicely done, and I feel certain that the recipient will treasure it. Far better than a gold watch, or a 'golden handshake'... or a whatever.
Awesome job Michael. Old and cold....brrrrr. I love painting smaller because number 1, you get something done in a relatively shorter period of time than painting a larger painting and 2, you get to concentrate on all those details. Really very well done!
Love the way you handled the composition and perspective, really well done I think. Having the very front of the engine the darkest value followed by the perfect shadowing of the tubular shape really looks engaging. I’m sure that they will cherish a bonafide hand painted work of art. 👍

A little 8x6 gem.
