Makara Sankranti

edited November 12 in Post Your Paintings

This painting is about one of the biggest festivals in India, celebrated under various names. It’s called MAKARA SANKRANTI,it is a festival of harvest. It is an important pan-Indian solar festival, known by different names though observed on the same date. Makar Sankranti is observed with social festivities such as colourful decorations, dances, kite flying, bonfires and feasts.

The big attraction of the festival is Gangireddu. It is a bull ,decorated with colourful clothes and it is led by the master. The master goes house to house along with the bull and an accompanying person. The master plays an instrument called Nadaswaram and the accompanying person beats dolu or drum and make the bull dance to their tunes. It symbolizes the upcoming good luck for the householders.People give rice ,clothes or money to them.Unfortunately it’s a fast dying tradition and they are hardly seen now.

I tried to show the festive atmosphere with the background, does it work? It’s acrylic on canvas,18 X 24 inches in size.C&C welcome. Thanks for looking.
