I had to laugh because I immediately half closed my eyes and remembered how much time I spent looking at the world through half closed eyes after I was taught tonalism. And it's certainly produced that effect of light in this piece. The warm darks against the light and blue. What blue is that? Was this a plein air piece? I can't imagine painting in changing or dim light - it would be difficult to see the colours and values on the palette and the canvas with any sense of control, I think.
