Watercolor Brush Recommendations

Hello! For those of you who do watercolor painting, what size and types of brushes would you recommend for a beginner? How many brushes would I need to get started? Would synthetic brushes suffice?

I'd recommend the Winsor & Newton Cotman Short Handle watercolour brushes here if you can get hold of them, they are a synthetic but hold water much better than your average synthetic, and are reasonably priced, You only need rounds really (and maybe a liner/rigger if you intend to do landscapes) I find a 3 or 4 is a really good all round brush, and a larger 12-14 for large washes is useful (though you can just get a cheap mop brush for washes - just rinse and gently tug out any lose hair before you first use it, they tend to shed)
