Lots of good things about this. The one thing you may want to think about is making the eyeball shaded more spherical. The painting as a whole I think is successful.
Thank you @dakmediocreart, im not too sure what you mean are you saying you think that the eyeball, on the shaded side of face, needs to be more spherical. Or that the eyeballs both need some shading to make them more spherical ?
Thank you @GTO, my hair has got a life of its own, ha ha
I did put a fair bit of study in thanks, there were a few times when I couldn’t stand to look at it and had to hide it for a few days. As well as swinging from thinking -its a load of crap to its quite good.
This is great, MichaelD. It has a very strong presence and a tactile, 3D feel. I, too, like the wild hair. I think the monochrome works very well, too. When I look at the eyes my brain somehow invokes colour - a pale blue - even though it's monochrome.
@tassieguy, Thank you Rob, I am pleased you like it. Interesting what you say about the pale blue because, although I was advised to put a touch of raw umber i nto the mix, I neglected to do so. I think some of those grays come over as a little blue.
that's a cool self portrait! and what an improvement from your first attempts at sketching a face. That course shows it actually helped a lot! The values. seem to be dead on and i really like the expression of the face!

I tend to have a happy smiling disposition, I told him I didnt want it like when you put a smile on for a photo being taken.
I also reminded him that I am mad.
Congrats on another fine portrait.
