Hello,
My name is Jeff and I am relatively new to painting. Started 6 months ago jumping around trying to learn and finally found this place which seemed to click. I have spent the last 4 years drawing and decided to challenge myself to paint.
I have already made a brush holder, mixed up some brush dip, and next is the home made color checker. I bought a basic set of the Geneva paints back in June and did one still life from a photo. Matching the colors was harder that I thought. I still need to get my lights correct and get rid of some glare. I would like to be able to set up a still life box, however I don't think I have the room for it, so photos and a computer screen will have to do for now.
One thing I am not sure of is if the color checker works best with photo or digital screen or just holding the brush or palette knife up to it.
This seems like a nice place and I am excited about learning DMP and meeting others here.

Welcome to you.
CC works best with real life. Dabbing colour on a laminated photo works best.
Painting from a screen is doable but it takes a bit of practice for the eye to accommodate the contrast ratio between transmitted colour and reflective paint colour.
Sounds like a collapsible still life box will suit your needs. Check out the video on this link.
