Painting over an old painting

I have a large canvas on which I started a landscape painting a few years ago and have long since abandoned. At some point, I would like to reuse the canvas if at all possible for another painting. The entire canvas is covered in paint but was never varnished.
Any ideas on the best way to get the canvas back to "blank," so to speak? I'm assuming staining over the paint with canvas stain is not an option.
Thanks for any suggestions.
