I have brilliant cadmium yellow and it is in the foreground and I don't want it to be so bright that it takes away from the subject. How can I tone it down in oil so as not to lose its hue?
Mix in purple. That will grey it which may be OK to some degree. Mark also says that raw umber if correctly formulated is just a dark yellow. The shadow colour of a banana is how he puts it. There is a whole video on it.
You could use umber or yellow ochre or you could mix it with a little violet into the yellow. I guess it depends on whether you want to lower the chroma, the value or both.

I find that mixing in a colour of the same hue (but less brilliant) gives you more control though.
