Since starting to paint, I have enjoyed working on master copies and feel that they usually turn out better than my own compositions, possibly because I work more assiduously to faithfully match colors, and draw with precision. And of course the original artist already worked out the difficult decisions about the subject matter and composition. In our original works, if we get those wrong, it does not really matter how good our technical painting skills are - the work simply won't be as compelling.
So, I'm curious, what would you rather have on your wall - a master copy that is close to a faithful reproduction of a work you love, or a composition entirely of your own making that is well-painted, but that may not be quite as compelling or interesting??
