Putting @ in front of someone's user name.

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while.

When responding to comments I see that each individual response has the @ in front of the username and then the poster responds to that person. What I did was copy the user name and then put @ in front of it but then it turns the entire thing into a link.  How is this done properly and easy?
