Painting Wood Grain

I am painting a picture of flowers on an old wooden fence. The wood is now gray and the grain is prominent.
I tried painting the light color first because there will be shadows over the grain. I have attached the photo I am working from and what I have painted.
The light gray is wet, everything else is dry to the touch. I tried using a palette knife to draw the lines and then blend a little. Didn't work so I wiped off the lines and most of the gray paint.
Maybe I should let the gray dry then paint on top of it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
