Portrait colors when there is no good reference photo

I am doing portraits of the two founders of the company I retired from.  The available reference photos do not show the flesh tones very well.  

How can I decide on the best color mixes for using the Carder method?  At this point, the only thing I can think of is to find photos of other individuals and try to use those skin tones.  

Are there other ways you can suggest?
