Painting in one layer dark to light - origin?

I know that  in oil painting historically an underpainting either in ochres or greys were used, and then a dead colouring stage, followed by glazing (if necessary).

Mark's DMP method however deals with a painting from darks to lights in one go.. I was wondering if anyone knew where this method originated from? I'm guessing Mark didn't invent it himself?
