I'm getting ready to begin a painting of this woman, but I want to paint it in a certain style. I love all the patterns and the very strong shadows and I don't want to overwhelm the viewer with the additional detail in the ocean and the wood grain. So I want to paint this in a contemporary style, where I paint those elements without detail. I think this will make the detail in the figure really pop. I know I've seen this before, but can't think of the artist(s) and I'd like to study some paintings before I begin. The painting by Hockney below is sort of the idea I'm after. The detail is in the pool and the remainder provides context but doesn't take away from the focal point. If you get what I'm after and you can suggest an artist whose work I could study, I'd appreciate it.
