Painting mirror like water

I started to paint the attached photo by just painting just the blue water background. My intent was to paint the lilies and pads over the background. But, I realized that the blue background was almost like a mirror. So flat and smooth. I like painting the back ground first otherwise I get brush marks when getting into the finer cracks of the objects.  Any suggestions?  painting just the back ground with no lilies or pads

Use a very soft brush, or hit it with a soft blender brush afterwards.  You can eliminate brushstrokes if you want to.

But that blue is not perfectly smooth, so painting it that way would lose some texture.
